Piedmont Hall
The Piedmont Hall is a club-style live music venue in Greensboro, North Carolina that was transformed from a former Canada Dry bottling warehouse into a multi-million dollar venue. This venue has hosted artists such as Elvis Costello, Chris Young, Scotty McCreery, and hard rock acts like In This Moment and Sevendust. This venue provides an immersive experience with a dynamic standing-room-only setting that allows fans to get as close as possible to the action. When you visit the Premium Lounge, available as an add-on for select events, it features a private bar and tables with seating, but it does not guarantee a reserved seat for every ticketholder. $140 million Upgrade in Greensboro
Syngenta Crop Protection's North American headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, recently received a call from a Midwest farm-supply retailer about a product separating out in a tank before being applied to a field. The call came a year ago before the 650 employees moved into the $140 million complex on 70 acres. This complex, which dates back to 1966, was functional but often drab and isolating. Having the access to labs and offices often requires a security check. Syngenta's campus upgrade aims to improve collaboration for crops. It's good news for business, and it's a good thing, too, for the employees.

AUBERGE RESORTS COLLECTION WELCOMES PRIMLAND, HOME OF THE ACCLAIMED HIGHLAND COURSE, TO ITS PORTFOLIO
The scenic Blue Ridge Mountains resort welcomes golfers, families, friends and couples looking for a one-of-a-kind retreat in the great outdoors
Auberge Resorts Collection is delighted to announce that it will welcome Primland, a majestic all-season mountain retreat in Virginia, to Auberge’s portfolio of award-winning hotels, resorts and residences as of June 1. Located at the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains on 12,000 expansive acres, Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection offers luxurious accommodations, a championship golf course, exquisite farm-to-table cuisine helmed by new Executive Chef Elliot Cunniff from Soho House in New York City, a serene spa and a level of outdoor adventure that is unrivaled on the east coast. In one of the most breathtaking mountain settings, the resort boasts impressive year-round activities for the entire family, including golf, horseback riding, fly fishing, alfresco yoga and meditation, kayaking, hiking, sporting clays, archery, stargazing in one of the largest observatories in the Eastern U.S., RTV trail riding and tennis. With Auberge Resorts Collection’s highly personalized service, Primland will be the quintessential escape this Summer.
“We are incredibly honored that the Primat family has chosen Auberge to be the stewards of Primland, one of the most spectacular resorts in the country,” said Dan Friedkin, owner and chairman, Auberge Resorts Collection. “It is an absolute privilege to bring our brand to this unparalleled experience in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.”
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection was initially purchased by late French industrialist, Mr. Didier Primat, in 1977 as an outdoor activity retreat for his family. In the early 2000s, Mr. Primat decided to expand the land’s capabilities and construct the resort and golf course in an eco-conscious and thoughtful manner. Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is rooted in a love of the land, which is expressed in the resort’s extensive efforts to minimize the impact on nature while enjoying its beauty.
“Auberge Resorts Collection has mastered a crafted approach to unique and personal service,” said Harold Primat, president of Primland. “We are excited to partner with the award-winning brand to realize our family’s vision to create one of the top-end mountain resorts in the U.S. and share the Primland experience with guests from around the world.”
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection features 62 rooms, including standalone cottages, cabins and treehouses. At the center of the property—which was recently voted "Best Resort in the U.S. South,” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2020—sits the Lodge, featuring a soaring great hall with twin fireplaces, a full-service spa, fitness center, indoor swimming pool, private theatre, game room and one of the largest telescopes and observatories in the Eastern U.S. The resort’s exceptional culinary program boasts three regional cuisine restaurants, a two-story wine cellar and private dining experiences for intimate gatherings and celebrations.
One-of-a-Kind Accommodations
Accommodations boast beautiful mountain settings with amenities such as in-room fireplaces, private balconies with undisturbed views and deep soaking tubs. The main Lodge features nine Mountain Rooms and sixteen Blue Ridge Suites. The Lodge’s most exclusive suite is the Pinnacle Suite, a two-story 1,800-square-foot glass-walled aerie located in the observatory tower, providing stunning views of the stars and vistas.
Across the property are several styles of standalone accommodations. The chalet-like Pinnacle Cottages and golf course Fairway Cottages each contain separate wings with rooms and suites that can be booked individually or groups can lodge together by opening up the common living room. The resort also features 11 spacious Mountain Homes containing between one and seven bedrooms.
Just a short drive from the Lodge, three Tree Houses are perched on the edge of the mountains, offering an experience that nods to Primat’s love of nature and the region. These intimate cabins are set in the strong limbs of the property’s oldest and most beautiful oak trees, giving way to treetop views of the majestic Kibler Valley and North Carolina piedmont from a vast private deck. While conjuring childhood memories, each of the Tree Houses is unique, taking on its own personality through bespoke decor.
Farm-to-Table Blue Ridge Mountain Cuisine
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection’s exceptional culinary destinations and programming are overseen by Executive Chef Elliot Cunniff, who joined the resort in Spring 2021. Chef Cunniff comes to the resort from New York City, where he got his start working under Daniel Boulud before moving up the ranks to, most recently, executive chef at Soho House New York. Chef Cunniff brings a wealth of creativity to all of the resort’s exceptional restaurants, including the signature restaurant, Elements, a harmony of the Virginia Highlands’ natural abundance and Southern comfort flavors, beautifully presented in a fine dining atmosphere. The property’s more relaxed eatery, 19th Pub, serves casual, hearty pub fare alongside a bar well-stocked with draught beers, single malts and spirits, as well as moonshine cocktails, which harken back to the region’s rich bootlegging history. The Woodland Grill is located at the Outdoor Activities Center for easy grab-and-go sandwiches between adventures. Schlumberger Wine Cellar, located in The Lodge and perfect for private events, features varietals from the world’s finest vineyards, including the resort’s sister property, Domaines Schlumberger, in France’s Alsace region. Set on its own ridge top is Stables Saloon - located in Primland’s former horse stables - where traditional Southern food and live bluegrass music come together for a rustic and convivial dining experience.
Adventure and Wellness
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection centers around its vast acreage and outdoor activities, just as Mr. Primat intended when he purchased the property as an outdoor retreat. One of the most beloved experiences of The Lodge is deep space star gazing through the professional-grade telescopes at the Observatory. The Outdoor Activities Center offers fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, archery, RTV trail riding, sporting clays and water sports on the 3-mile long Talbott Lake. For golf enthusiasts of all skill levels, the Highland Course at Primland is an 18-hole, Audubon-certified, all bentgrass greens course carved from the mountains’ natural landscape by renowned golf course architect Donald Steel.
After a day of adventure, The Spa at Primland offers rejuvenating and energizing treatments that combine Native American healing rituals and European spa techniques.
A Destination Worth Exploring
While guests may find everything they need and more on the property, Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is surrounded by enchanting mountain attractions and numerous local towns that are well worth exploring. From the quaint shops of Meadows of Dan to the historic Mabry Mill, Fairy Stone State Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, local wineries and an abundance of bluegrass and country music festivals, there is so much to see and do on a day trip outside the gates of the resort.
“Each of our properties is unique and captures the soul of the destination, and Primland encompasses the best that the Blue Ridge Mountain region has to offer. It is a natural fit for Auberge Resorts Collection,” said Craig Reid, president and chief executive officer, Auberge Resorts Collection, “We look forward to welcoming our guests to this extraordinary destination.”
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is conveniently located two hours from Charlotte, five hours from Washington D.C, and just 90 minutes from two regional airports, Piedmont Triad (PTI) in Greensboro and Roanoke Regional. The resort’s partnership with NetJets provides guests with special benefits when flying privately through two nearby airports, Blue Ridge and Mt. Airy-Surry County, only 45 minutes away. The property also features a helipad located at the North Gate.
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is now accepting reservations. For more information, please visit aubergeresorts.com/primland.

Vance, J. D., author. Hillbilly elegy : a memoir of a family and culture in crisis. First Harper paperback edition. "Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis--that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance's grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother, struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country." -- Publisher's description.

"In the wake of yet another set of police killings of black men, Michael Eric Dyson wrote a tell-it-straight, no holds barred piece for the NYT on Sunday July 7: Death in Black and White (It was updated within a day to acknowledge the killing of police officers in Dallas). The response has been overwhelming. Beyoncé and Isabel Wilkerson tweeted it, JJ Abrams, among many other prominent people, wrote him a long fan letter. The NYT closed the comments section after 2,500 responses, and Dyson has been on NPR, BBC, and CNN non-stop since then. Fifty years ago Malcolm X told a white woman who asked what she could do for the cause: Nothing. Dyson believes he was wrong. In Tears We Cannot Stop, he responds to that question. If we are to make real racial progress, we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed or discounted. As Dyson writes: At birth you are given a pair of binoculars that see black life from a distance, never with the texture of intimacy. Those binoculars are privilege; they are status, regardless of your class. In fact the greatest privilege that exists is for white folk to get stopped by a cop and not end up dead...The problem is you do not want to know anything different from what you think you know...You think we have been handed everything because we fought your selfish insistence that the world, all of it--all its resources, all its riches, all its bounty, all its grace--should be yours first and foremost, and if there's anything left, why then we can have some, but only if we ask politely and behave gratefully"--Provided by publisher.

As the youngest marcher in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, Lynda Blackmon Lowery proved that young adults can be heroes. Jailed nine times before her fifteenth birthday, Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. for the rights of African-Americans. In this memoir, she shows today's young readers what it means to fight nonviolently (even when the police are using violence, as in the Bloody Sunday protest) and how it felt to be part of changing American history.

Albert Einstein's achievements are not just milestones in the history of science; decades ago they became an integral part of the twentieth-century world in which we live. Like no other modern physicist he altered and expanded our understanding of nature. Like few other scholars, he stood fully in the public eye. In a world changing with dramatic rapidity, he embodied the role of the scientist by personal example. Albrecht Folsing, relying on previously unknown sources. And letters, brings Einstein's "genius" into focus. Whereas former biographies, written in the tradition of the history of science, seem to describe a heroic Einstein who fell to earth from heaven, Folsing attempts to reconstruct Einstein's thought in the context of the state of research at the turn of the century. Thus, perhaps for the first time, Einstein's surroundings come to light.

Gay, Roxane, author. Bad feminist : essays. First edition. A collection of essays spanning politics, criticism, and feminism from one of the most-watched young cultural observers of her generation, Roxane Gay. "Pink is my favorite color. I used to say my favorite color was black to be cool, but it is pink, all shades of pink. If I have an accessory, it is probably pink. I read Vogue, and I'm not doing it ironically, though it might seem that way. I once live-tweeted the September issue." In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman (Sweet Valley High) of color (The Help) while also taking readers on a ride through culture of the last few years (Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown). The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture. Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny, and spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better.

Sachs, Jeffrey, author. The ages of globalization : geography, technology, and institutions. "Today's most urgent problems are fundamentally global. They require nothing less than concerted, planetwide action if we are to secure a long-term future. But humanity's story has always been on a global scale, and this history deeply informs the present. In this book, Jeffrey D. Sachs, renowned economist and expert on sustainable development, turns to world history to shed light on how we can meet the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Sachs takes readers through a series of six distinct waves of technological and ideological change, starting with the very beginnings of our species and ending with reflections on present-day globalization. Along the way, he considers how the interplay of geography, technology, and institutions influenced the Neolithic revolution; the spread of land-based empires; the opening of sea routes from Europe to Asia and the Americas; and the industrial age. The dynamics of these past waves, Sachs contends, give us new perspective on the ongoing processes taking place in our own time-and how we should work to guide the change we need. In light of this new understanding of globalization, Sachs emphasizes the need for new methods of international governance and cooperation to achieve economic, social, and environmental objectives aligned with sustainable development. The Ages of Globalization is a vital book for all readers aiming to make sense of our rapidly changing world"--.

Brooks, Max. The Harlem Hellfighters. First edition. "From bestselling author Max Brooks, the riveting story of the highly decorated, barrier-breaking, historic black regiment--the Harlem Hellfighters. The Harlem Hellfighters is a fictionalized account of the 369th Infantry Regiment--the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. From the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches in France, bestselling author Max Brooks tells the thrilling story of the heroic journey that these soldiers undertook for a chance to fight for America. Despite extraordinary struggles and discrimination, the 369th became one of the most successful--and least celebrated--regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, spent longer than any other American unit in combat and displayed extraordinary valor on the battlefield. Based on true events and featuring artwork from acclaimed illustrator Caanan White, these pages deliver an action-packed and powerful story of courage, honor, and heart"--. Browning, Christopher R., author. Ordinary men : Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the final solution in Poland. Revised edition. One morning in Józefów -- The order police -- The order police and the Final solution : Russia 1941 -- The order police and the Final solution : deportation -- Reserve Police Battalion 101 -- Arrival in Poland -- Initiation to mass muder : the Józefów massacre -- Reflections on a massacre -- Łomazy : the descent of Second Company -- The August deportations to Treblinka -- Late-September shootings -- The deportations resume -- The strange health of Captain Hoffmann -- The "Jew hunt" -- The last massacres : "Harvest festival" -- Aftermath -- Germans, Poles, and Jews -- Ordinary men. In the early hours of July 13, 1942, the men of Reserve Police Battalion 101, a unit of the German Order Police, entered the Polish Village of Jozefow. They had arrived in Poland less than three weeks before, most of them recently drafted family men too old for combat service--workers, artisans, salesmen, and clerks. By nightfall, they had rounded up Jozefow's 1,800 Jews, selected several hundred men as "work Jews," and shot the rest--that is, some 1,500 women, children, and old people. Most of these overage, rear-echelon reserve policemen had grown to maturity in the port city of Hamburg in pre-Hitler Germany and were neither committed Nazis nor racial fanatics. Nevertheless, in the sixteen months from the Jozefow massacre to the brutal Erntefest ("harvest festival") slaughter of November 1943, these average men participated in the direct shooting deaths of at least 38,000 Jews and the deportation to Treblinka's gas chambers of 45,000 more--a total body count of 83,000 for a unit of less than 500 men. Drawing on postwar interrogations of 210 former members of the battalion, Christopher Browning lets them speak for themselves about their contribution to the Final Solution--what they did, what they thought, how they rationalized their behavior (one man would shoot only infants and children, to "release" them from their misery). In a sobering conclusion, Browning suggests that these good Germans were acting less out of deference to authority or fear of punishment than from motives as insidious as they are common: careerism and peer pressure. With its unflinching reconstruction of the battalion's murderous record and its painstaking attention to the social background and actions of individual men, this unique account offers some of the most powerful and disturbing evidence to date of the ordinary human capacity for extraordinary inhumanity.

Introduction : To hope rather than to fear -- The confidence of the whole people : visions of the Presidency, the ideas of progress and prosperity, and "We, the people" -- The long shadow of Appomattox : the Lost Cause, the Ku Klux Klan, and Reconstruction -- With soul of flame and temper of steel : "the melting pot," TR and his "bully pulpit," and the Progressive promise -- A new and good thing in the world : the triumph of women's suffrage, the Red Scare, and a new Klan -- The crisis of the old order : the Great Depression, Huey Long, the New Deal, and America First -- Have you no sense of decency? : "making everyone middle class," the GI Bill, McCarthyism, and modern media -- What the hell is the presidency for? : "segregation forever," King's crusade, and LBJ in the crucible -- Conclusion : The first duty of an American citizen. "We have been here before. In this timely and revealing book, ... author Jon Meacham helps us understand the present moment in American politics and life by looking back at critical times in our history when hope overcame division and fear. With clarity and purpose, Meacham explores contentious periods and how presidents and citizens came together to defeat the forces of anger, intolerance, and extremism. Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called 'the better angels of our nature' have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Lyndon B. Johnson, and illuminating the courage of such influential citizen activists as Martin Luther King, Jr., early suffragettes Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, civil rights pioneers Rosa Parks and John Lewis, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Army-McCarthy hearings lawyer Joseph N. Welch, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. He writes about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the birth of the Lost Cause; the backlash against immigrants in the First World War and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s; the fight for women's rights; the demagoguery of Huey Long and Father Coughlin and the isolationist work of America First in the years before World War II; the anti-Communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy; and Lyndon Johnson's crusade against Jim Crow. Each of these dramatic hours in our national life has been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back, to assert hope over fear--a struggle that continues even now. While the American story has not always--or even often--been heroic, we have been sustained by a belief in progress even in the gloomiest of times. In this inspiring book, Meacham reassures us, "The good news is that we have come through such darkness before"--as, time and again, Lincoln's better angels have found a way to prevail."--Dust jacket.

Kidd, Sue Monk. The invention of wings. The story follows Hetty "Handful" Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid, and follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist and, importantly, an abolitionist), the author allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined. -- Provided by publisher. "Hetty 'Handful' Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke's daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. The novel is set in motion on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other's destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love. As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, the author goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful's cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better. This novel looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. -- Publisher's description.

"In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella 'Especially Heinous,' Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naïvely assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgängers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes. Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction." -- Publisher's description.

The Artist Sheena Rose Is Reaching Beyond Barbados
By TAMARA BESTMAY 31, 2017

Tumblr media
ST. PHILIP PARISH, BARBADOS — Almost every room in Sheena Rose’s family home, tucked away on a quiet street here, has played host to her paintings and live performance art.
In 2015, for “A Bit of Gossip, a Bit of Privacy,” Ms. Rose invited both the public and people from the art world to meander through a bedroom, an office, a bathroom and a studio, and watch her, in collaboration with three actors, explore the breakup of a relationship, drawn from her life experiences. The tension between private moments and public life is a recurring thread in Ms. Rose’s work, in which she often explores Barbadian culture, using self-portraiture as the lens.
Some visitors may have found her art a little too personal. “I find that people get uncomfortable,” she said during a recent interview at her home studio. “But they say that it is refreshing because Barbados is a very conservative space.”
“The trick is just to be honest,” Ms. Rose, 31, added. “People want to see themselves.”
Tumblr media

......................................................................
After years of creating paintings and drawings in her home studio, and inviting hundreds of footsteps from the public, she is looking forward to a change.
“My parents have been very supportive, but I think we all have outgrown the idea of people walking in and out of our home,” she said, adding that she looks forward to moving into a new studio, which is under construction. Three times larger than her home studio, the space will be hers to use free for a year, courtesy of a patron of her work.
The new studio is an encouraging next step for Ms. Rose, who returned home to the island last year after completing two years as a Fulbright scholar at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a graduate degree in studio art. Her emotional conflict over finding a sense of belonging since returning to Barbados is the subject of one of her performance pieces, “Island and Monster,” which she performed on Friday at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, known as MoCADA, in Brooklyn.
Tumblr media
American Rose? She was a Fulbright scholar at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and says she considers New York a second home. Credit Rose Marie Cromwell for The New York Times Ms. Rose said that living in the United States had created breakthrough moments for her career, like group shows at that museum and at Art Basel Miami Beach. Beyond exhibitions, the two years led to a greater sense of identity and purpose as a Barbadian artist, she said.
“When you live on an island that is majority black, you don’t study your skin color per se; it seems normal,” Ms. Rose said. “I used to paint figures without skin color,” she said, adding that she now paints most of her characters black. “It wasn’t just about the skin. It was about claiming, grabbing my history, my culture, and I’m proud of it.”
Ms. Rose first fell in love with art through drawing in sketchbooks as a child. In 2007, during a school trip, a visit to the Whitney Museum in New York and a video installation she saw while there cemented her decision to pursue a career in art. She counts Christopher Cozier, Richard Mark Rawlins and Ebony G. Patterson among the Caribbean artists who have inspired her work.
Tumblr media
Ms. Rose says that when she was a child, her sketchbooks provided a safe haven from teasing by classmates. They remain an important part of her process. Credit Rose Marie Cromwell for The New York Times Like almost every facet of life in the Caribbean, the art market here is heavily influenced by tourism, a billion-dollar industry that underpins many island economies.
“The Caribbean is synonymous with this ‘leave your day-to-day if you’re stressed out and overworked, come and play, drink all you want, lay on the beach, pass the days away,’” said Oshun Layne, manager of exhibitions and programs for the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, an organization based in New York that works to support emerging artists like Ms. Rose. “When you’re coming for leisure, what ends up happening is that the art reflects that nostalgic feeling. You’re not really looking to dig deep enough to see what else is out there — what is going on in the communities that is being reflected in the art.”
In addition to stand-alone art galleries in Barbados, other exhibition and gallery-like spaces are popping up in unexpected spots like the upper levels of restaurants, particularly along the island’s west coast, where there’s a concentration of luxury hotels and restaurants. Many offer a mix of decorative and contemporary work from local artists like Ms. Rose, Terrence Rupert Piggott and Llanor Alleyne.
Still, decorative art reigns supreme.
“Works geared toward the tourist aesthetic are commercially sustainable because they are tapping into this market of people that are coming and going,” said Natalie McGuire, manager of Gallery NuEdge Fine Arts, in Holetown in western Barbados. ”That’s the majority of engagement that the clientele or even collectors at this level have.”
Tumblr media
In 2015 Penguin Press repurposed Ms. Rose’s “Too Much Makeup on Her Face” for the cover of the novel “The Star Side of Bird Hill.” Credit Rose Marie Cromwell for The New York Times Exhausted by scenes of idyllic island life, Ms. Rose created the “Town” and “Sweet Gossip” series, centered in Bridgetown, the country’s capital. “Town,” a set of largely black-and-white drawings with bits of mixed media, shows citizens navigating everyday moments: shopping, commuting, resting. “Sweet Gossip,” a collaboration with the photographer Adrian Richards and Ms. McGuire, explored the role of gossip in social interactions. The piece consisted of two parts: paintings with images related to the overheard phrases, and a silent performance, accompanied by poster-size versions of the artworks, held in the streets of Bridgetown.
Since 2012, Ms. Rose has created versions of “Town” for Miami, New York, Cape Town and Amsterdam. The popularity of the series has helped build interest from collectors overseas, including the tennis star Venus Williams, who acquired a drawing from “Town” at an auction last year. In 2015, Penguin Press used “Too Much Makeup on Her Face,” a painting from “Sweet Gossip,” as the cover of Naomi Jackson’s debut novel, “The Star Side of Bird Hill,” set in Barbados during the summer of 1989.
The bubbly Ms. Rose, who is passionate about art advocacy, teaches visual arts at Barbados Community College in St. Michael. Still, she is grappling with whether to remain in Barbados or move abroad to a city like New York, which she said was like her second home.
“Some people say: ‘Man, Sheena, you have so much going on for yourself. Why are you studying Barbados so much?’ And I say: ‘Barbados is my home. I can’t help it.’ I have this anxiety of ‘Should I leave? Will things be bigger and better for me?’”
Those questions — and possible answers — will no doubt continue to play out in her art.

The Walt Disney Company Partners with U.S. State Department on Third-Annual “Hidden No More” Exchange Program Featuring 50 International Women Leaders in STEM
The Walt Disney Company has partnered with the U.S. State Department on its third-annual Hidden No More International Visitor Leadership Program, which launched today in Washington D.C. The program was inspired by the 2016 award-winning film Hidden Figures to highlight and advance the important achievements of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Hidden No More brings to the United States 50 women from around the world who have excelled in STEM careers including spacecraft engineering, data solutions and data privacy, and STEM-related education. Over the course of the program, these women will engage with private and public sector organizations, including National Geographic, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), The Smithsonian Institute, and The Geena Davis Institute.
In a new initiative this year, with support from production company Summerjax, portions of Hidden No More will be filmed and packaged into short-form videos for the participants to use to amplify their stories at home to inspire young people to pursue STEM education and careers. Hidden No More participants will be interviewed about their careers and notable contributions to the international STEM community by members of the UN Foundation’s Girl Up initiative, which promotes adolescent girls’ leadership and empowerment. The Hidden No More program offers a unique mentorship opportunity for local Girl Up members, who will spend time with the women and be involved in various stages of filming.
“Disney is proud to partner with the U.S. State Department on this exceptional program that champions women in STEM and the indispensable contributions they’re making around the globe,” said Latondra Newton, senior vice president and chief diversity officer, The Walt Disney Company.  “By raising awareness of the incredible talent that exists among these women and helping them amplify their powerful stories, we are helping to create a brighter future for them and for the next generation.”
Later this week, participants will join a day of programming at National Geographic headquarters, complete with executive presentations, networking opportunities, and a visit to the newest exhibit at the National Geographic Museum, “Women: A Century of Change,” which displays more than 100 archival images of women from around the world. The program will then end with a capstone day at The Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, CA which will showcase the various ways in which storytelling, technology and innovation come together in Disney content.
Before arriving in Burbank, participants will split into groups and visit eight additional U.S. cities: Boston, MA, Charleston, SC, Chicago, IL, Greensboro, NC, Huntsville, AL, Orlando, FL, Pensacola, FL, and St. Petersburg, FL. These stops will provide opportunities for the women to meet with professional counterparts and discuss strategies to advance the achievements of women in STEM.

eBay exec reveals a key advantage for sellers choosing the site over rivals like Amazon
It’s nearly impossible to run a successful retail business these days without some kind of online presence. And when it comes to selling wares online, small businesses have options.
Steve Wymer, eBay’s chief communications officer and its head of global impact, highlighted the tools the e-commerce platform offers to independent sellers looking to move inventory online in a recent interview with Business Insider.
eBay provides guidance on things like inventory management, pricing, and discounting strategy to its tens of millions of sellers, many of whom have never sold things online before.
“What motivates a consumer to pull the trigger to buy something is a sophisticated science,” Wymer said. “This is not something you guess at.”
The company has made a series of partnerships with small business owners through its Retail Revival program, which has centered on specific cities including Lansing, Michigan; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Akron, Ohio. Small business owners selected for the program receive support from eBay to grow their customer base via the e-commerce marketplace, beyond whatever brick-and-mortar presence they might have.
eBay most recently announced it had selected Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as its next Retail Revival city.
“They can get, sort of, an e-commerce store in a box through eBay, where they can move those items and they don’t have to pay for a content engine to drive traffic back to a site that they have to maintain,” Wymer said.
He cited one example of a vintage store owner in Baton Rouge who told eBay: “I have a great website, I just don’t sell anything on it.”
Wymer also pointed out a major difference that sets eBay apart from at least one of its big rivals in the e-commerce space.
“We don’t compete with our sellers, and we don’t have our own inventory. We’re a pure marketplace,” Wymer said. “We succeed when our sellers succeed. Our whole goal is to help our sellers find the right buyers.”
Steve Wymer is eBay’s chief communications officer and head of global impact.
Courtesy of Ebay
eBay has made this kind of comment before. It wrote in its first-quarter earnings release in April: “The company made measurable progress against protecting its unique advantage as a true marketplace in service of — not in competition with — sellers of all sizes, improving how people buy and sell on the platform.”
While eBay does not mention any company by name, e-commerce observers might note that this could be seen as a subtle dig at Amazon, which has faced criticism for being both an operator of a third-party marketplace and a seller of its own goods.
Amazon’s push into private label
Amazon has launched hundreds of private labels and exclusive brands in the last several years. Many of them, critics have pointed out, compete directly with third-party sellers on Amazon’s own website.
Read more: Elizabeth Warren accuses Amazon of using a ‘special information advantage’ for ‘anti-competitive’ practices
Sen. Elizabeth Warren in March unveiled a plan to break up tech companies she says have gotten too big. In a blog post published to Medium, she specifically calls out Amazon:
“Many big tech companies own a marketplace  —  where buyers and sellers transact  —  while also participating on the marketplace. This can create a conflict of interest that undermines competition. Amazon crushes small companies by copying the goods they sell on the Amazon Marketplace and then selling its own branded version.”
Warren reiterated those criticisms in a town hall speech in April, to which Amazon responded in a statement to Business Insider:
“Amazon does not use individual sellers’ data to determine which private label products to launch. Private label products are a common retail practice, and Amazon’s private label products are only about 1% of our total sales. This is far less than other retailers, many of whom have private label products that represent 25% or more of their sales. And independent sellers continue to see record sales on Amazon, growing to more than half of all sales on Amazon today.”
Studies by third parties have borne this point out. A recent piece of analysis by Marketplace Pulse has suggested that Amazon’s private labels have yet to take off with consumers.
In a survey of third-party Amazon sellers by Feedvisor, 68% said they had not been negatively affected by Amazon’s private-label brands. Only 14% said they had been negatively affected, while 18% were unsure.
Amazon has also not shied away from throwing punches at eBay. In his annual letter to shareholders in April, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos compared the growth in merchandise sales of third-party sellers on eBay and on Amazon in the years from 1999 to 2018, concluding that independent sellers did “so much better selling on Amazon than they did on eBay.”
“To put it bluntly: Third-party sellers are kicking our first party butt. Badly,” Bezos wrote.
eBay said it has partnered with 300 small businesses through its Retail Revival program so far. The platform as a whole has 180 million active global buyers and 1.2 billion active listings.

The Daily Tulip – News From Around The World
Thursday 19th July 2018
Good Morning Gentle Reader….  where ever you are on the planet Earth 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) from Pluto which could be seen, as I walked Bella, this early morning in the Capricorn Sagittarius complex in the northern sky, I had to imagine the NASA space craft New Horizons speeding past taking thousands of photographs… The Night is warm and humid with rain promised for the week end, so mustn’t complain… The Colombian Coffee had brewed by the time I got back to the house, so a quick review of the papers and news sites let me give you my perspective of what has happened on this little blue planet….
'SEE YOU IN COURT,' NOVA SCOTIA LOTTO WIN AUNT TELLS NEPHEW…. A Canadian woman's first act upon winning the lottery was to threaten to sue her nephew for his half of the C$1.2m ($912,000; £690,000) win. "See you in court," Barbara Reddick told Tyrone MacInnis as they both posed with the giant novelty cheque in Nova Scotia province. Both their names were on the winning ticket from Wednesday night's "Chase the Ace" draw. But Ms Reddick claims she never promised to split the jackpot with him. "I'm taking him to court," she told those gathered at the winners' ceremony on Thursday in Margaree Forks, a small community of about 3,400 people, according to the CBC. "I'm getting a lawyer tomorrow." She denied the two had had an agreement. But her nephew told reporters: "Yes, we did." Ms Reddick said: "He's lying." She said she just put her nephew's name on the ticket for luck "because he's like a son to me - he was". Ms Reddick told reporters she only promised to share possible winnings from a smaller draw, not the jackpot. "He was lucky, but not for half a million dollars," she said. Bernice Curley, chairwoman of the Margaree Forks Chase the Ace committee, said she was taken aback by the family feud. "I'm a little bit disappointed that happened at the end," she told CBC. Chase the Ace is a lottery game popular all over Canada's east coast, and often raises money for charity, in this instance for the regional fire services.
'VAPING' PILOT CAUSED AIR CHINA PLANE TO PLUNGE 6,500M…. A co-pilot smoking an e-cigarette on an Air China flight caused the plane to start a rapid emergency descent, investigators have said. They say he tried to hide the fact that he was smoking but accidentally shut off the air-conditioning, causing oxygen levels to fall. The crew on Tuesday's flight from Hong Kong to the city of Dalian released oxygen masks and brought the plane more than 6,500m (21,000ft) lower. It later returned to cruising altitude. An initial probe by China's Civil Aviation Administration in China has shown that the co-pilot tried to turn off a fan to stop smoke reaching the passenger cabin without telling the captain, but turned off the air-conditioning unit instead. Passengers say they were told to fasten their seat belts as the plane had to descend. The regulator's safety officer Qiao Yibin said the crew had to perform emergency measures, dropping oxygen masks until they could figure out the problem. If a plane loses cabin pressure, the pilot has to bring the aircraft to a lower altitude to keep crew and passengers safe. Once they saw that the air conditioning had been turned off, they reactivated it and brought the flight back to its normal altitude. Authorities are reportedly investigating the cause "in greater detail", examining both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder to determine precisely what caused the incident.
MAN DROVE CAR SITTING ON BUCKET AND STEERING WITH PLIERS….  A motorist was stopped by police for driving while sitting on a bucket and steering with pliers. The battered car, which also had no front wing, bumper, headlights and a flat tyre was pulled over in King's Lynn in Norfolk England. Norfolk's roads policing unit tweeted pictures of "the most un-roadworthy car" and said there were "too many offences to mention". Police said the driver has been reported to court. "Yes this was driven on a road and yes he was sitting on a bucket and steering with a pair of mole grips," officers wrote, as they posted pictures of the vehicle in Saddlebow Road. Dozens of people have commented on the shocking state of the vehicle. One person referred to a television series where contestants compete to build working machines from scrap, saying: "I think too much scrap heap challenge has been watched by that driver."
AUSTRALIA AND NZ RECALL FROZEN VEGETABLES OVER LISTERIA FEARS…. Australia has become caught up in a European food scare, with supermarkets across the country recalling bags of frozen vegetables over fears they may contain a deadly bacteria. It follows similar moves in Britain last week over vegetable products from supplier Greenyard Frozen. Food authorities said the vegetables could carry listeria monocytogenes which can cause listeriosis. Listeria in tainted melon killed seven people in Australia earlier this year. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand have recalled nine products - a mix of corn, carrot, pea and broccoli ranges - that originated from Britain, Belgium and Hungary. They were sold in supermarket chains Woolworths, Aldi and IGA. "The products affected contain a particularly dangerous strain of listeria and are being recalled as a precautionary measure to ensure consumers are protected," chief executive Peter May said. He said cooking the vegetables should kill the bacteria, but warned against eating undefrosted or undercooked frozen vegetables.
LEEDS SCHOOL USES SPOONS TO HELP PREVENT FORCED MARRIAGE…. A school is attempting to tackle forced marriages by handing out spoons to urge students to hide them in underwear to trigger metal detectors at airports. Pupils at the Co-operative Academy in Leeds England, have been told to hide the cutlery there if they fear they are being taken overseas to be married. It will trigger metal detectors at airports, allowing them to raise the alarm with security staff privately. Harinder Kaur, from the school, said the spoons can "save lives". She said that 80% of UK forced marriages happened abroad during the summer holidays. "In the six-weeks holidays we know there is no contact between school and the family and families have that opportunity to go abroad, get their child married and come back," she said. "It's a way of making our children aware there is a safety net there." A law making it a criminal offence to force people into marriage came into effect in June 2014. Parents who force their children to marry can be punished by up to seven years in prison.

Asheville’s Lee Walker Heights, born out of segregation, social improvement desires
(Photo: David Baker Architects and McMillan Pazdan Smith)
ASHEVILLE – As a neighborhood, Lee Walker Heights has been a contradiction since its first brick was laid.
Now the city’s oldest public housing development is about to go through a historic transformation fueled by federal and local taxpayers and a desire to break up decades of concentrated poverty.
The mid-20th century apartment complex was born from the notion of social improvement: The desire to help people mired in the Great Depression’s squalor. But it was also rooted in the institutional idea that people with darker skin should live apart from whites.
The original plan for Lee Walker Heights built in the early 1950s.
(Photo: David Baker Architects and McMillan Pazdan Smith)
The complex provided residents with safe structures, modern bathrooms and other amenities. Meanwhile, "slum" razing initiatives destroyed homes, businesses and other buildings at the heart of Asheville’s African-American community.
Perched on a hill, residents have had a bird’s eye view of an economic frenzy of buying, selling and building while they have been knee-deep in poverty and crime.
It’s been a place of community and despair and has produced working people, criminals and a college president.
With its demise imminent, many of Lee Walker’s approximately 200 women, men and children are excited at the prospect of better and safer lives. But they are anxious at the loss of neighbors who are their social safety nets and early warning systems.
Others fear the planned transformation won’t include them — or won’t fix underlying problems.

Resident Crystal Reid has supported the plan to raze the aging and dated 96 apartments and replace them with a 212-unit mixed-income neighborhood. Public and nonprofit developers announced Feb. 6 that they had secured funding for the $36.5 million overhaul. The announcement represented a success after recent failed attempts to win federal rebuilding aid.
Reid praised developers for using resident feedback in the new complex design and spoke before City Council members in 2016, encouraging them to contribute city tax dollars.

"I always tell people with time will come change, like it or not," she said.
Examples of improvements are safer play areas so children aren’t in the road and better connectivity for the isolated complex through car, bicycle and bus access.
Construction is set to start in 2019 and be finished by 2021.
The new development will include 96 "deeply affordable" units for the current Lee Walker residents, who have average incomes of $8,854. Those would be reserved long-term for the city’s poorest residents.
An additional 116 units would be reserved for people making 60 percent of the area median income — $25,763 for a single person or $36,780 for a family of four. Rents could rise with changes to the area median income, but calculated today, they would be $660 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,120 for a three-bedroom unit.
The apartments will provide affordable homes for cashiers, bus drivers, nursing assistants, child care workers, servers, cooks and others working in the tourism and service sectors, said officials with the Asheville Housing Authority and the nonprofit Mountain Housing Opportunities.
"There is a deficit in our community of over 7,000 affordable homes for the average working family," said David Nash, housing authority chief operating officer.
The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, which awarded the federal tax credits, requires a third-party manager, and that will be Partnership Property Management of Greensboro. The private for-profit company has an office in Asheville and manages other tax credit properties by the housing authority and MHO, said Nash.

Starting in 2019, demolish 96 apartments dating to 1950
Build 212 apartments with high-efficiency heating systems and lighting fixtures, low-flow plumbing fixtures and Energy Star appliances.
Build a second access road to Biltmore Avenue to the east.
Include 9,000 square feet of common space, including play areas, and 237 parking spots.
Finish by 2021
Developers hope property to the east, 319 Biltmore Ave., will become a second phase of the project with nearly 200 apartments and retail and other commercial space. Owner Duke Energy has granted a right-of-way for a road in the first phase and an option for the city to buy it for $5.3 million for a second phase.
Development nearby
In the last five years, there has been hundreds of millions of dollars in development planned and built near Lee Walker Heights.
Commercial development permits or orders: 377 in the South Slope, including construction of the $2.6 million Green Man Brewery and the $3.2 million Banks Avenue building anchored by Catawba Brewing.
Housing permits or orders: 25 in the South Slope, including the planned 145 Biltmore Avenue project with one-bedroom condos starting above $500,000 and penthouses at more than $1 million. At the foot of Lee Walker is the Southside Townhomes development with units starting at $615,000.
Also: Mission Hospital is doing a $400 million expansion along Biltmore Avenue.
The layout for a new development at the current Lee Walker Heights complex
The housing authority said it will help with moving expenses and getting people temporary homes. When it’s finished, residents are guaranteed a spot in the new development, but they don’t have to move back.
"(The housing authority) has committed to assist with any relocation activities in a sensitive and responsible manner in order to minimize the disruption to families’ lives," said the 2016 project master plan, a document presented to the council.
Some residents have remained wary, though, pointing to the privately-run subsidized housing facility, McCormick Heights that was torn down in 2006 in East End/Valley Street neighborhood. A mixed-income development was planned to replace it, but that fell through and residents found themselves permanently displaced.
On a mild winter afternoon, Keykey Ellington sat on one of the small porches attached to the low brick apartment buildings. She was with a man and another woman, all watching a flurry of three children spinning and tumbling around a steeply sloping yard.
The mostly dirt area was fronted by the one-way narrow winding loop road that is the only vehicle access through Lee Walker. It’s so narrow that city buses can’t navigate it to reach the complex.
Ellington said she had lived at Lee Walker from 2013-16 and had been back again for six months. She had missed the resident meetings about the changes because she’d been at work, she said.
Apartments in Lee Walker Heights are worn and dated and don’t warrant renovation, Asheville Housing Authority officials say.
(Photo: Maddy Jones/[email protected])
Ellington didn’t volunteer a lot of personal information and her eyes shifted occasionally from the children to group of men gathered down the street.
Once relocated, she wouldn’t want to move back, she said, even to the promise of newer apartments with better access to buses and other amenities.
Ellington questioned whether some problems would go away.
"Like crime. Is it going to be the same? Like all the drug dealers up here and stuff. Is it going to be same?" she said. "It might be the same."
The Asheville Housing Authority in 2009 announced that Lee Walker saw the highest number of police calls per housing unit for any of the subsidized complexes in the city.
Residents make up 0.2 percent of the city’s total population, but in 2017, the complex accounted for 2 percent of all of Asheville’s reported aggravated assaults, police data shows.
Reducing concentrated poverty and new buildings with a better layout can make a difference, said Nash, housing authority chief operating officer.
"As a general rule, attractive, mixed-income tax credit properties…do have lower crime rates in Asheville and around the country," Nash said.
A view of the southern part of the proposed new development at Lee Walker Heights.
(Photo: David Baker Architects and McMillan Pazdan Smith)
In 2003 one of Asheville’s most notorious homicides happened at Lee Walker Heights when 13-year-old Danquon Brown during a daytime shooting killed 18-year-old Odell Dixon Jr. in the middle of the street with a bullet to the head. Lee Walker Heights had the most calls per unit of Asheville Housing Authority apartments in 2009. In 2017, the neighborhood of less than 200 people had 0.2 percent of the city’s population of 89,121, but 2 percent of its reported aggravated assaults.
Asheville
2016: 281 aggravated assaults, 143 robberies, 9 homicides
2017: 284 aggravated assaults, 183 robberies, 7 homicides
Lee Walker
2016: 2 aggravated assaults, 0 robberies, 0 homicides
2017: 5 aggravated assaults, 1 robbery, 1 homicide
– Residents of the current 96 apartments or others who qualify for deeply subsidized public housing. Average income at Lee Walker is $8,854. Residents pay rents equal to 30 percent of their income.
– To qualify for the other 116 apartments residents must make no more than 60 percent of area median income. Currently, that is $25,800 for a single person or $36,780 for a family of four. At today’s economic conditions, rents would be $690 for a one-bedroom apartment and $957 for a three-bedroom unit.
Here’s the breakdown of the money behind $36.5 million project
$12 million – private investment through tax credits
$4.2 million – City of Asheville
$4.2 million – Buncombe County
$13 million – Mortgage paid by Asheville Housing Authority and Mountain Housing Opportunities from the new development’s revenues.
$3.1 million – Housing authority
Other costs of public housing
To get federal money, the federal government required that "slum" units be knocked down on a one-for-one basis for each unit to be built.
In a Dec. 21, 1978 letter to the City Council, the Rev. Wesley Grant presented this list of demolished buildings in the "East Riverside Area":
More than 1,100 homes
6 beauty parlors
5 barbershops
5 filling stations
14 grocery stores
3 laundry mats
8 apartments
7 churches
3 shoe shops
2 cabinet shops
2 auto body shops
A hotel
5 funeral homes
A hospital
3 doctors’ offices
1929 – Great Depression begins. Slows growth of Asheville homebuilding for decades.
1940 – Asheville initiates a slum clearance plan to remove 5,473 dwelling units "unfit for habitation."
1950 – Asheville’s first public housing project, Lee Walker Heights apartments for blacks, opens. Named for educator Walter Smith Lee and tuberculosis specialist Dr. John Wakefield Walker. It cost $893,400 to build ($9.4 million in today’s dollars).
1951 – Pisgah View Apartments for whites opens.
1950s – Complex gets nickname "Diaper Hill" after black WWII veterans and their families help fuel mini-baby boom.
1969 – $1.3 million in mostly federal money goes to renovation projects at three public housing complexes, including $400,000 for "day nurseries" at Pisgah View and Lee Walker.
1983 – Asheville Housing Authority begins $23 million physical improvement project.
1991 – Housing authority secures $5.1 million in federal money for public housing programs. $1.6 million to remove lead paint from Lee Walker. $312,000 for drug elimination program and $223,000 for rental assistance.
1992 – Congress passes legislation establishing the Hope VI program to provide funding for razing public housing and building mixed-income neighborhoods.
1994 – $2.5 million renovation completed at Lee Walker Heights.
2003 – In one of city’s more notorious homicides, 13-year-old Danquon Brown kills 18-year-old Odell Dixon Jr. in a daytime shooting in the middle of Lee Walker’s main street.
2009 – Housing authority pursues federal HOPE VI funding through a competitive to tear down Lee Walker and rebuild it as mixed-income neighborhood. The authority does not win funding.
2015 – In another attempt to build a mixed-income neighborhood, Mountain Housing Opportunities and the housing authority pursue federal housing tax credits through a competitive process. The proposed initial phase 120-unit project is estimated to cost $20 million. The authority does not win the funding.
2017 – MHO and the housing authority expand the scope of the project to 212 units and reapply for another federal tax credit program. Project costs estimated at time of application are $36.5 million.
July – Phyllis Worth Dawkins, raised in Lee Walker, becomes president of Bennett College in Greensboro.
January – MHO and housing authority mixed-used project awarded $12 million in federal tax credits, giving go-ahead to historic transformation.
